- Student Research Technical Supervisor
I am an eclectic researcher in pursuit of harmony between arts and interactive technology, trying to fit a computer-science education with my passion and knowledge of animation, photography, cinema, music, sound design and nearly all other artful expressions.
From 2004 to 2011 I've obtained my BSc and MSc in Computer Science and Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa with a major in Multimedia Systems, a minor in Intelligent Systems, and a dissertation about animating a highly articulated virtual human skeleton with bio-mechanically inspired movement constraints in realtime.
In 2011, I joined the GAIPS research group at INESC-ID and IST as an assistant researcher in the EU FP7 LIREC, and later in the EMOTE projects. In both projects my focus shifted from virtual characters, to achieving believable animation and expression in autonomous robots while they interact with humans.
Throughout these years, I've collaborated with researchers and fellow PhD students at GAIPS, I've mentored various MSc student projects, and provided teaching-assistance in the Social Robots and Human-Robot Interaction classes of IST's MSc program in CS. I've also been collaborating with students from both the Carnegie-Mellon and Yale Universities.
Currently a PhD student at IST 'LisbonTech', I'm focused on discovering how animation artists can take part in the process of developing artificial intelligent for animation so that interactive robots can following on principles of traditional animation while interacting with humans and the external environment. My academic work has been shared through over 20 peer-reviewed scientific papers, published and distinguished at conferences such as the ACM/IEEE SIGGRAPH (Student Competition Finalist), the ACM/IEEE HRI (Best Paper Nomination), AAMAS, AAAI Symposia, IVA and others. Last year I made my debut in conference organization by taking the role as General co-Chair of the HRI Pioneers Workshop 2016.
