SCML met our robots

March 29, 2016

Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa (SCML) visited GAIPS to meet the robots and interact with them. The group of 12 older adults spent an enjoyable and unusual afternoon surrounded by some of GAIPS' latest projects.

We prepared 5 activities in which participants could use different capabilities. The first one was the Sueca card game with EMYS, our social robotic player. This experiment was conducted in a controlled environment and was video-recorded for further analysis. Participants also answered an interview at the end in order to collect their opinion about the game experience and the social robotic player.

One of the activities was controlling a sphero or a BB8 robot using a tablet application. At the same time, NAO taught participants how to play the Tangram game in a touch screen. There also were the Geometry Friends game so that they can test their coordination capabilities.

At the end, we showed them how can robots be programmed to do what we want. We used the Choregraphe program to manipulate a NAO robot and opened a discussion to clarify some of their doubts about robots.

This was a very pleasing afternoon for the elderly and an interesting challenge for us. We aim to understand and create new ways for robots to interact with them!

The 2nd place in the HRI Video Competition rewarded the Sueca social robotic player of the PArCEIRO project. The video shows some curious interactions between EMYS, its partners and its opponents during the user study.

PArCEIRO meets SCML

December 3, 2014

PArCEIRO went to Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa (SCML) to introduce the project to a senior audience. SCML is a well-known institution that promotes wellbeing and support, and has care home centres across Lisbon. Since one of the PArCEIRO's goals is the development of a companion robot for elderly, this meeting aimed to establish a connection for future work.

Seniors were very curious with the project and we were warmly welcomed by them. We believe our further work together will be promising. We are looking forward to the next visit!

Coup experiments

December 2, 2014

Last Thursday one of the groups from PArCEIRO team accomplished successfully the first part of data collection with the Coup Card Game. Participants accepted the challenge and came to play with each other, mastering their bluff skills to be able to win the game!

The project kicks off!

November 5, 2014

PArCEIRO's team got together for the beginning of the project. In order to celebrate this remarkable day, we took some photographs. We tried to recreate one of the future scenarios, playing cards with the EMYS robot. The photos are available in the media section.
