Ecute

      Prof. Ana Paiva is the Principal Scientific Investigator (PI) of INESC-ID in the Ecute project (Education in Cultural Understanding Technology-Enhanced), an European funded (FP7- 257666) research project exploring innovative technologically-enhanced learning approaches in cultural understanding that will help to deal with intercultural problems. This project will develop and apply virtual world simulations with intelligent interactive graphical characters embodying models of culturally-specific behaviour and interaction in scenarios developed via a user-centered design process. The consortium is composed by eight partners, including two Japanese Universities, and the coordinator is Prof. Ruth Aylett, from the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.


Semira

     Prof. Ana Paiva is the Principal Scientific Investigator (PI) of INESC-ID’s participation in the SEMIRA project (Simulating the EMergent Impact of Regulations Across countries), an European funded project under the Complexity Net framework, exploring the interaction between emerging normative behaviour and new regulations in different countries. The goal is to support the preparation of new EU regulations through a computational framework. Two types of agent-based simulation tools will be developed based on it. One tool will validate the theoretical framework with actual people and the other will do large scale simulations based on emergent behaviour. The project has four partners: the group of Gert Jan Hostede, Frank Dignum from the University of Utrecht, Rosaria Conte from CNR and us.


Siren

    Prof. Ana Paiva is the Principal Scientific Investigator (PI) of INESC-ID’s participation in the SIREN project (Social Games for Conflict Resolution Based on Natural Interaction), an European funded (FP7-258453) research project exploring a new type of educational game, the conflict resolution game, which takes advantage of recent advances in serious games, social networks, computational intelligence and emotional modelling to create uniquely motivating and educating games that can help shape how children think about and handle conflict. The project has six partners, including the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), an European Game Company, Serious Games, Bath University in the UK and ITU in Denmark. The general coordination of the project is done by  Kostas Karpouzis from the National Technical University of Athens, in Greece.


Gala

    Prof. Ana Paiva is the Principal Scientific Investigator (PI) of INESC-ID’s participation in  the GALA network of excellence (Game and Learning Alliance), an European funded (FP7-258169) network of excellence in the area of serious games, which aims to shape the scientific community and build a European Virtual Research Centre (VRC) aimed at gathering, integrating, harmonizing and coordinating research on Serious Games (SGs). The starting date of the project was October 2010 and the end date is September 2014. The GAIPS group coordinates the Technical Committee on Artificial Intelligence Techniques on Serious Games and the application area of “Games for Social and Emotional Learning and Ethics”.


Lirec

    Prof. Ana Paiva is the Principal Scientific Investigator (PI) of  INESC-ID’s participation in the LIREC project (LIving with robots and interactive companions), an European funded (FP7 -215554) research project exploring how we live with digital and interactive companions. The LIREC project aims to create a new generation of interactive, emotionally intelligent companions that is capable of long-term relationships with humans. LIREC is a collaboration between 10 European partners, including six universities, two research institutes and two companies spread across 7 European countries. LIREC covers specialized areas ranging from psychology, ethology, human-computer interaction, human-robot interaction, robotics and graphical characters. The research team focuses on both virtual companions and physical embodiments such as robots.

E-Circus

    Prof. Ana Paiva was the Principal Scientific Investigator (PI) of INESC-ID’s participation in the Ecircus project (Concepts and methods for exploring the future of learning with digital technologies - FP6-027656) aimed at developing a new approach in the use of ICT to support social and emotional learning within Personal and Social Education (PSE). To attain this, eCIRCUS investigated educational role-play using autonomous synthetic characters and involving the learners through affective engagement, including the use of standard and highly innovative interaction mechanisms. The project had nine partners, including one SME. The starting date of the project was March 2006 and the end date was February 2009. 


Chameleon

   Prof. Ana Paiva and her team at INESC-ID were external consultants for the QREN project (Chameleon- Constructing Humane Autonomous Machines Embodied in Living Environments of Nature), coordinated by the company YDreams, one of the largest companies in Portugal to develop interactive installations. The aim was to integrate agent technology and Affective Computing in some of the applications built by YDreams. The project started in 2008 and finished in February 2010. 



MindRaces

    Prof. Ana Paiva was the Principal Scientific Investigator (PI) of INESC-ID’s participation in the Mind RACES project (‘From Reactive to Anticipatory Cognitive Embodied Systems- FP6-511931), a three-year EC funded project (Sixth Framework Programme - Information Society and Technologies - Cognitive Systems) involving 8 Partners. The project mainly focused on the concept of Anticipation. The project started in October 1st 2004 and was formally completed on December 2007.


Humaine

    Prof. Ana Paiva was the Principal Scientific Investigator (PI) of INESC-ID’s participation in the HUMAINE (Human-Machine Interaction Network on Emotion), a EU-funded network of excellence (FP6-507422) that made a co-ordinated effort to come to a shared understanding of the issues involved in the area of affective computing, and to propose exemplary research methods in the various areas. There were some core technologies in the network, ranging from application-oriented and psychologically oriented work to more affective signal processing, and artificial intelligence. The project started on the 1st of January, 2004 and was formally completed on December 2007.


Kaleidoscope

    Prof. Ana Paiva was a Principal Scientific Investigator (PI) of INESC-ID’s participation in the Kaleidoscope (Concepts and methods for exploring the future of learning with digital technologies), a EU-funded network of excellence (FP6-507838) which brought together European teams in technology-enhanced learning. Its goal was to integrate 76 research units from around Europe, covering a large range of expertise from technology to education, from academic to private research.  The role of the GAIPS group in the network was mainly in establishing a Special Interest Group on Narrative-based Learning Environments. The network started on January, 1st, 2004 and was formally completed on December 2007.


Elvis

    Prof. Ana Paiva was the Principal Scientific Investigator (PI) of INESC-ID’s participation in the ELVIS project (E-learning with virtual interactive synthetic characters), a EU funded project (ASI-D7-301-97/0126-84) specific to establish collaboration with Asia. This project included not only two European countries (UK and Portugal) but it also involved a University in China and in Macau. The main goal was the integration of agent platforms with graphics engines in order to allow for the development of better AI and agents in graphical systems. The project started on March, 2003 and was formally completed on June 2005.


Elves

    Prof. Ana Paiva was the Principal Scientific Investigator (PI) of  INESC-ID’s participation in the ELVES project, a EU funded project (90105) under the SÓCRATES (Minerva) programme. This project at the establishment of 3D Virtual Environments as tools to support learning in schools. The project started on March, 2002 and was formally completed on January 2004.


Victec

    Prof. Ana Paiva was the Principal Scientific Investigator (PI) of INESC-ID’s participation in the VICTEC project (Virtual ICT with Empathic Characters), a EU funded project (FP5-033310) in the 5th Framework Programme. The aim of the project was the creation of an anty-bullying software with intelligent agents to help children deal with the problem in schools. As a result, the first version of the FearNot! system was created. The project was coordinated by the University of Salford, UK, and had partners in the UK, Germany, and in Portugal (including the company AUTOR). The project started on March, 2002 and was formally completed on January 2005. 



The Storyteller “O Contador de Histórias”

   Prof. Ana Paiva was the principal coordinator of this project funded the the Portuguese Science Foundation, FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia), which aimed at the construction of a storyteller, as an embodied lifelike character, with emotional expressions and using a Portuguese text to speech developed by the Speech and Language group at INESC-ID. This project was thus a cooperation between the GAIPS group and L2F (Laboratório de Língua Falada). The project started in 2002 and finished in 2005.


Coldex

    : Prof. Ana Paiva was the Principal Scientific Investigator (PI) of  INESC-ID’s participation in the COLDEX project (COllaborative Learning and Distributed Experimentation), a EU funded project (IST-2001-32327) in the IST Programme. The aim of the project was the development and use of new IT approaches and computational tools to foster scientific experimentation, modelling and simulation in distributed and collaborative settings in an inter-cultural community of learners. The project was coordinated by the Universitaet Duisburg-Essen and had nine partners. The project started in June 2002 and was formally completed in May 2005.


POE-Safira

    Prof. Ana Paiva was the principal coordinator of this POE funded project, that aimed at the integration of the technologies developed within the Safira project into the National market. The project was funded by the Programa Operacional da Economia (POE and then PRIME) and the goal was the integration of the technologies in the company Autor, Tecnologias Multimédia from the ONI Group.



Safira

    Prof. Ana Paiva was the Prime Contractor and Principal Scientific Investigator (PI) of the SAFIRA project (Supporting Affective Interactions for Real-time Applications ) a EU funded project (FP5-011683) in the IST programme. SAFIRA was the first EU project in the area of Affective Computing, and created a framework to enrich interactions and applications with an affective dimension. A set of basic demonstrators were created, providing a demonstration of the potential of such systems: 2D and 3D virtual environments shared by synthetic characters and users, and ”anthropomorphized” personality-rich personal service assistant based applications. The project was coordinated by her and had seven partners: Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, in the UK, DFKI and GMD in Germany, SICS in Sweden, ADETTI in Portugal and OFAI in Austria. The project started in July 2000 and was formally completed in September 2002. 


DiViLab

    Prof. Ana Paiva was the Principal Scientific Investigator (PI) of INESC-ID’s participation in the DiViLab project (Distributed Virtual Laboratory), a EU funded project (IST-1999-12017) aimed at developing a new approach for virtual laboratories to support science learning in schools and universities. The project started in February 2000 and was formally completed on December 2003. 


Nimis

    Prof. Ana Paiva was the Principal Scientific Investigator (PI) of the NIMIS project (Networked interactive media in schools), a EU funded project (29301) in the ESPRIT programme aimed at developing a new type of computer supported classroom, based on new interaction modalities, and new applications where personalisation and adaptation were considered. The project was coordinated by the Universitaet Duisburg-Essen, had four partners and its results were excellent not only as a research project but also, in terms of visibility, having been target for a piece in the TIME Magazine. The project started in October 1998 and was formally completed in September 2000.
